The Playstation 3 “Greatest Hits” program (or “red label” titles) includes titles that have been on the market for 10 months and sold 500,000 copies. These editions sell at the excellent price of 29.99. At that price, it’s hard to go wrong, but with almost 100 titles currently available on the label, ThePlaystation decided to list our favorite Greatest Hitsso consider this the Greatest Hits Greatest Hits collection, if you will.Prince of Persia (2008): After getting progressively darker during its time on the Playstation 2, Xbox, and Gamecube, the series lightened up a little for its first edition on next-gen consoles. The gameplay is both old-fashioned and new, the magical companion of Elika is bewitching, and the storyline concerning the battle between two powerful gods is appropriately epic.Call of Duty: World at War (2008): Like most Call of Duty games, you’ll need to have your PS3 connected online via Ethernet or wireless internet service to get the full experience with this game. Set during WWII, the game includes co-op for up to four players online for the first time in the series. Of course, you can always just do competitive deathmatch or capture-the-flag as well. When it comes to sports games, Playstation3 definitely has all of the other leading consoles beat! I have always been a fan of Playstation, but another system caught my eye for awhile. I recently had my faith restored in my favorite gaming system ever.
I was over at my new girlfriend’s apartment last night and I discovered a little something about her that makes me love her that much more. I discovered she was a hardcore gamer, much like myself. I was so Read the rest of this entry »

2010 has come and gone, leaving a major impact on the gaming world. Companies could no longer rest on gameplay or graphics alone. Instead, they could only compete with top notch acting, re-playability, high def graphics, and a unique storyline. Here is a glimpse at how the games of 2011 are going to build on the promises that the 2010 gaming industry made.Wolfenstein 3D was released nearly 20 years ago and it shocked the world with its cutting-edge graphics of the 80′s. Since then, first person shooters have held a special place in the gamer’s heart. Rage,http://ps3.ign.com/articles/114/1140658p3.html is the newest release from the company id that combines excellent action inside a dark and gritty world.LittleBigPlanet was one of the few games that never quite found a single genre that it could fit into. Media Molecule decided to further confuse the market, in the best possible way, with their 2011 release of LittleBigPlanet2,http://www.littlebigplanet.com/en/2/. This game defies all convention as a mixture of arcade, sports, and adventure gaming in one of the most beautifully mesmerizing worlds ever developed. These aren’t the only two games being released for the PS 3 in 2011. They will receive some stiff competition that will keep fans of all genres with their hands firmly glued to their controllers.

The upcoming platforming game Explodemon! could best be described as the video-game equivalent of a Quentin Tarantino movie. Like the director’s films, Explodemon! is a homage to its classic forerunners, many of which come from outside the U.S. These include platformer adventures like Mega Man and Super Metroid, the fighting game Street Fighter II, and more recent games like Halo and Half-Life 2. The developers, Curve Studios, say that their game will pay tribute to aspects of all of these, including the bad translation when applicable. The game is scheduled to be released this winter. In preparation, Curve has released a one-minute trailer, showing off the game’s 2.5-D graphics, physics-based puzzle-solving, fast-moving gameplayand of course explosions. Lots of explosions. The trailer ends with the Explodemon! logo, which includes Japanese kanji, just like the games of yesteryear. Read the rest of this entry »

If you’ve ever read classic kung-fu comics like Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu or Iron Fist (or its excellent modern reimagining), then you know just how good beating up on ninjas can look on the page. But until now, you’ve never known how good it can feel. That’s all set to change with the upcoming release of Kung-Fu Live on the Playstation Network. More information is expected to be released at Comic-Con this week, but here’s what we know already.Kung-Fu Live will be the latest title to incorporate Playstation Eye or the upcoming Playstation Move camera technology. These devices literally allow you to become the game character, and beat down on a variety of thugs and nogoodniks. In addition to using your most reliable weapon (your body), you can also bring in objects like the bat seen in the game trailer. Read the rest of this entry »

Sony announced that this will be the first time since the PS3′s release four years ago in which the company sees profits on the system. In an interview with IGN, President of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida made sure to note that they still aren’t seeing huge numbers, but that they “aren’t bleeding like they used to.”The Playstation 3 underwent a large transformation (and price cut) last year, when the PS3 Slim was released for 299. This model features a smaller shape and a 120 GB hard drive for 100 less than the original console. Sony’s recent news is not likely to mean another price drop, but instead an increase in production as Sony attempts to move more units. However, you can still get more for your money by taking advantage of Sony’s Playstation Plus service. Coming right on the heels of a download to allow 3D functionality, the new service will let gamers personalize their online profiles and access exclusive features and content. This could finally allow Sony to compete with the Xbox Live Gold service in terms of exclusive content like downloadable games and discounts. Read the rest of this entry »

With the release of The Sly Cooper Collection, a PS3-remastered collection of all three classic platformers, coming in November, fans have been waiting to find out if Sony would continue the practice for other fan-favorite games. It now seems that others may indeed be (if I may borrow an image from Sony’s esteemed competitor) in the pipeline. No official titles have been announced to follow up The Sly Cooper Collection, which will be updated to take advantage of HDTVs and will also feature Playstation Move mini-games and Trophies. However, Sony President of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has said that “Sony is looking at different methods” for porting PS2 titles to the station. It would make sense for single games to be available via download, rather than in hard copy, since it would be inefficient to release a single PS2 game on a Blu-Ray disc. Sony also released a God of War collection last year which combined the first two games in the series, updating the graphics and speed to 60 fps and providing Trophy support. However, some complained of the lack of inventiveness in the Trophies list as well as poorly remastered graphics. Read the rest of this entry »

A couple of weeks ago, a mysterious 8-minute long video started making the rounds on the web, featuring Michael Jai White as hard-bitten detective Jax, Jeri Ryan as the sultry Sonya Blade, and Ian Anthony Dale as the eerie Scorpion. If those characters don’t sound familiar, then you’re not a fan of the long-running Mortal Kombat fighting series, and considering its lackluster presentation in recent years, it’s hard to blame you. However, the short showcased a darkness and energy never before seen in the series, tempered by a real-world sensibility. While fans wondered what this short entailed, NetherRealm Studios announced the latest in the game series. It was later confirmed that the video was an unofficial teaser for the rumored third film. This synergistic shot could be just what the series needs to win over a new generation of fans. The new game is titled simply Mortal Kombat, taking a back-to-basics approach. In that vein, the storyline revisits the events of the first three games, picking up with thunder god Raiden right before his execution by the evil Shao Kahn. Raiden sends a message back in time, and in doing so, he (and the player) revisit the events of MK I-III, encompassing black magic, humanoid reptiles, and cybernetic ninjas. Marvel comics have seen an amazing resurgence in recent years, especially with the success of films like Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. Popular game titles like Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 also brought in new fans. Ultimate Alliance 2 was an adaptation of two popular storylines from the Marvel Comics universe, Secret War and Civil War. These tales left no character untouched, and many were thrilled at the opportunity to play as favorites like Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor, along with surprises like vampire-hunter Blade and the wisecracking assassin, Deadpool. Now Marvel has a number of new ways for fans to create their own stories. First up is exclusive downloadable content for Little Big Planet, the acclaimed PS3 title which allows players to construct their own doll-like characters (referred to as Sackboys and Sackgirls) and run them through puzzle-based levels, making sure not to get crushed, flamed, or thrown into the abyss along the way. Marvel’s content will come with costumes of 20 of the most popular characters, including Captain America, Daredevil, Hulk, Iron Man, as well as the urban vigilante, the Punisher. There will also be a four-level kit in which players can take on the X-men’s nemesis Magneto. Read the rest of this entry »
